Pjanic's Progress…
June 6th 2008 marked an exciting day in the life of Miralem Pjanic. Earmarked around Europe as one of the great up and coming talents in football he left Metz and joined the dominant force in French football, Lyon. As Pjanic himself declared when the transfer was completed; "I am pleased with the transfer and very happy to have come to a great club such as Lyon. I am here to win trophies and don't feel sorry to have declined other offers to be here in Gerland." While it is fair to say that he has only been at Lyon for a short period of time, it would also be fair to say that things haven't gone as well for Pjanic as he would have hoped. At just 18 years of age he has found his opportunities limited. His ability as a footballer overlooked and overshadowed by players with far more experience, such as Juninho and Benzema. At Metz he was considered a vital player, needed in every game. In total he made 32 appearances, scoring 3 goals and is credited with 1 assist. It must not be forgotten that this was all in a season where Metz were relegated from the French top flight. He was, without a doubt, their shining light and was adored by the Metz faithful. His performances were consistent and brought interest from Europe's biggest sides. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan were all waiting in the wings to snap up the services of the attacking midfielder. Then, when you compare this to his time at Lyon where he has made only 2 starts for the club and 5 appearances from the substitute's bench, it can be seen that there is stark difference in Pjanic's fortunes. He is yet to turnout for the side in the Champions League, score a goal or assist in any competition. When he has played his performances have been at best mediocre and to top it all off when Lyon came up against Sochaux in the league he was injured and has been out ever since. It is clear for all to see that his career at the club hasn't even begun. Despite this disappointing start, prior to his injury there had been glimmers of his ability. Passing and running with the ball is what he does best and when he does this there is always a sense of expectation. The fans are excited by Pjanic. Bloggers and fan forums have gathered to talk about the potential of their up and coming star. Many feel that with Juninho coming to the end of his career, Pjanic is the man to take his place. Furthermore, should rumours indicating that Benzema will soon leave, once he has recovered from his injury he should be given more of a chance. One thing is for sure and that is Pjanic has the potential to become one of the World's great footballers and if Lyon don't use him, someone else will.
